Polliner - the pollination partner
" For to the bee a flower is a fountain of life,
And to the flower a bee is a messenger of love,
And to both, bee and flower, the giving and the receiving of pleasure is a need and an ecstasy."
/Kahlil Gibran/
Pollinating insects provide essential ecosystem services for us and for natural communities. Their disappearance from the landscape is a serious problem with unpredictable consequences that affects everyone. Although we only began to recognize it late, in the late 2010s, many people are now aware of the worrying fact that the diversity and abundance of insects, including pollinating communities, is declining dramatically. This is both a serious conservation problem and a threat to the security of our food supply.
About 80% of known plant species depend partly or completely on animal pollinators, which also means the dependence of entire ecosystems. At the same time, more than a third of our food is also up to the work of pollinators. This includes most vegetables and fruits, oil and other industrial crops, as well as some important animal feed.
The primary causes of population decline are habitat loss and pesticide use. Garden owners, municipal green space managers, and most importantly, agricultural producers can do a lot to protect pollinating insects.
My work aims to contribute to the collaborative creation of an environment that ensures the long-term sustainability of diverse, vibrant pollinator communities and the services they provide.
I aim to help crop production businesses select the right pollinator species and develop pollinator-centric management plans tailored to the specific crop and regional characteristics.
